Land Rover has finally lifted the veil on the Range Rover Electric, the long-awaited all-electric version of its flagship luxury SUV. The order book is now open, with pricing starting at £154,000 for the EV550 Autobiography trim. After a protracted development period, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has delivered its first zero-emission Rangie, a vehicle that aims to balance the brand’s rugged heritage with modern electric technology.

The car is not a clean-sheet EV design. It is deliberately an electric variant of the existing fifth-generation L460 Range Rover. Owners can still purchase the model with diesel, petrol, and plug-in hybrid powertrains for the foreseeable future. Visually, it looks much like any other L460, with only a blanked-off grille and low-drag wheels distinguishing it from its combustion-powered siblings.

Under the Skin: Platform Compromises

The vehicle sits on JLR’s Multi-Longitudinal Architecture (MLA) platform. This chassis was created from scratch to support full electrification but is not a dedicated EV-only structure. Consequently, the Range Rover Electric faces certain compromises regarding efficiency and range compared to smaller, road-focused competitors like the BMW iX3 or Volvo EX60. It also trails behind the upcoming BMW iX5, which promises a larger battery and significantly greater range.

Despite these limitations, the SUV retains the core identity of a Range Rover. It looks, smells, and feels like one, and it maintains the capability to traverse difficult terrain. The car weighs 2,810kg and utilizes twin electric motors, each producing 349bhp, to drive all four wheels. This setup eliminates the need for a conventional gearbox, transfer case, or propshaft, space that is instead occupied by the battery pack.

The battery is a double-stacked 118.5kWh unit with an 800-volt architecture. It features split-charging technology, similar to what was seen on the Porsche Macan Electric, to optimize charging speeds across various charger types. Official figures state a 10-80% charge takes 22 minutes, while 137 miles of range can be added in just 10 minutes. The peak charging rate is 350kW, with a WLTP range of 372 miles. JLR suggests a “real world” figure of 333 miles.

Engineering Choices and Thermal Management

Robustness remains a key focus, evidenced by the development of a proprietary heat management unit called ThermAssist. The system is designed to maintain performance in extreme conditions, from the Arctic Circle to hot desert dunes. Initially, JLR planned to use a split approach to motor technology, pairing a powerful rear unit with a more efficient front unit. However, testing revealed performance shortfalls and thermal issues, forcing a switch to twin high-output permanent magnet units.

Testing covered nearly a million miles, both virtual and real, in locations ranging from Arjeplog to Dubai. While the on-road feel remains to be fully assessed in upcoming reviews, off-road prototypes have shown strong potential. The electric powertrain allows for precise control that mechanical systems with clutches, gears, and turbos cannot easily match. Slip is managed at processing speeds that are far faster than those possible in an internal combustion engine.

This precision translates to tangible off-road advantages.

Market Strategy and Buyer Demographics

Buyers of the Range Rover Electric are likely accustomed to commanding a higher price for a vehicle that is quieter, more comfortable, and capable of going further than many rivals. Here, they are paying a premium for an EV with less range and power than some dedicated electric competitors. However, the brand’s strength suggests that this trade-off may be acceptable to its loyal customer base. The ability to refuel via a wallbox overnight, rather than spending significant sums at a petrol station, offers a different kind of appeal, even if it means longer stops on long road trips.
