Kia Sorento bookings begin in India

Kia has started official bookings for the Sorento SUV in India and released its first teaser image ahead of the model’s launch. Customers can reserve the vehicle at dealerships or through the automaker’s website, marking a formal shift from the earlier phase when dealers were informally accepting reservations without company backing. The booking process, while open, does not yet include a confirmed launch timeline, leaving potential buyers to rely on speculation about a possible debut before the end of the calendar year. The teaser image, though minimal, provides enough visual cues to confirm the SUV’s design language aligns with Kia’s recent global models, emphasizing a bold front fascia and a commanding road presence.

The formal booking process follows weeks of reports that dealers were already accepting unofficial reservations, a common practice in the Indian automotive market where demand for new models often outpaces official communication. The teaser image shows only T-shaped daytime running lights, stacked LED headlamps, fog lamp housings, roof rails, and a long body, with the rest of the vehicle concealed under camouflage. Based on the global version, the Sorento measures 4,815 mm in length, 1,900 mm in width, and 1,700 mm in height, positioning it as one of the larger offerings in its segment. The extended wheelbase and overall dimensions suggest a spacious cabin, a key selling point for families and those prioritizing comfort during long drives.

Kia confirmed hybrid and diesel powertrains for the Indian market but has not shared full specifications, leaving some ambiguity about performance metrics beyond the expected engine configurations. The hybrid version is likely to use a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine with 238 hp and 380 Nm, combined with a 1.49 kWh battery and a six-speed automatic transmission. This setup, derived from the global model, balances power and efficiency, though real-world fuel economy figures will depend on driving conditions and usage patterns. The diesel variant may use the 2.2-litre engine from the Kia Carnival, a proven unit known for its torque delivery and suitability for highway cruising. While the global model offers front-wheel and all-wheel drive, it remains uncertain whether AWD will be available in India, where cost considerations and market preferences often lead manufacturers to omit such features in favor of more affordable configurations.

The local version will probably come in 6- and 7-seater configurations, unlike the global model, which also includes a 5-seat option. This decision reflects Kia’s understanding of Indian buyer preferences, where larger families and multi-generational households often prioritize seating capacity over cargo space. The absence of a 5-seater variant may also help streamline production and inventory management, reducing complexity in a market where demand for specific configurations can be unpredictable.

Interior features and expected pricing

Though Kia has not officially detailed the Sorento’s cabin for India, spy images and the international model suggest a twin 12.3-inch display setup, integrating the instrument cluster and infotainment system into a seamless digital interface. This design choice aligns with the growing trend of minimalist cockpits in premium vehicles, where physical buttons are replaced by touch-sensitive controls and voice commands. The panoramic sunroof, another expected feature, enhances the sense of openness in the cabin, a factor that has become increasingly important to Indian buyers, particularly in urban settings where traffic congestion can make long commutes feel claustrophobic.

Ventilated and powered front seats, a 360-degree camera, and a head-up display are also likely to be part of the package, catering to the comfort and convenience expectations of the segment. The 360-degree camera, in particular, addresses a common pain point for Indian drivers handling tight parking spaces or congested streets, while the head-up display reduces the need to glance away from the road, improving safety. Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems are expected to be included, offering features like adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking. These technologies, while not yet standard in all vehicles, are becoming more prevalent in the premium SUV space as manufacturers respond to increasing consumer awareness of safety and automation.

Test vehicles have shown a rotary gear selector and an electronic parking brake, both of which contribute to a cleaner, more modern center console layout. The rotary gear selector, a departure from traditional lever designs, frees up space for additional storage or cupholders, a practical consideration for Indian buyers who often travel with multiple passengers and luggage. The electronic parking brake, meanwhile, eliminates the need for a manual lever, further decluttering the cabin and reinforcing the SUV’s premium positioning.

The SUV is expected to start at around ₹40 lakh (ex-showroom). This pricing places it against the Skoda Kodiaq and Volkswagen Tayron in the premium SUV segment. The Kodiaq currently starts at ₹34.99 lakh, while the Tayron begins at ₹24.95 lakh, creating a tiered competitive setting where the Sorento occupies the upper end of the price spectrum. The ₹40 lakh starting point suggests Kia is targeting buyers who are willing to pay a premium for a combination of space, technology, and brand perception, rather than those prioritizing cost savings alone.

If the hybrid variant meets efficiency expectations, it could reduce demand for diesel in this segment, particularly among urban buyers who prioritize fuel savings and lower emissions. However, with charging infrastructure still limited outside major cities, diesel may remain the preferred choice for long-distance travel, where range anxiety and refueling convenience outweigh the benefits of electrification. The Sorento’s arrival will increase competition in a price range where features play a key role in buyer decisions, as manufacturers vie for attention in a segment that blends practicality with aspirational appeal. The inclusion of hybrid technology may also appeal to corporate fleets and environmentally conscious buyers, broadening the SUV’s appeal beyond traditional family-oriented customers.

Kia has not announced a debut date, but the open booking window suggests a launch could occur before the year ends, aligning with the automaker’s strategy of capitalizing on festive season demand in India. The timing, if confirmed, would allow Kia to leverage the increased consumer spending that typically accompanies major holidays, potentially accelerating initial sales momentum.
