Honda Activa e is Indias priciest escoot

The Honda Activa e, one of Honda’s first electric scooter offerings in India, arrives with a blend of familiar styling and a battery‑swapping model that sets it apart from most domestic e‑two‑wheelers.

Design and built‑in features

Visually, the Activa e keeps the shape that made the gasoline‑powered Activa a household name. It lacks aggressive angles, but its curvy silhouette is accentuated by LED daytime‑running lights and a modest headlamp that sits neatly on the front apron. The premium “Ride Sync Duo” version adds blackened diamond‑cut alloy wheels, a front disc brake and a telescopic fork, giving the scooter a slightly more upscale feel.

Inside, a 7‑inch TFT display dominates the dashboard. Riders can toggle Bluetooth, pair phones and choose between three ride modes—Econ, Standard and Sport—through a dedicated button. The interface is clear, though the reverse function demands several presses, making the control layout feel a bit tangled.

Performance and ride experience

The Activa e is powered by a 6 kW swingarm‑mounted motor that produces 22 Nm of torque. In Sport mode the scooter reaches 0‑60 km/h in roughly 7.3 seconds, a respectable sprint for a city commuter. Suspension remains competent, absorbing road imperfections while still letting riders feel the texture of the pavement.

One oddity noted during testing is that the indicated range stays the same across all three modes. Honda says a software update will eventually adjust the figures, but the current static display can mislead riders about their real‑world mileage.

Unlike many electric two‑wheelers, the Activa e relies on a battery‑swapping system rather than home charging. At a Honda service hub, the swap takes under a minute once the key card is presented and the prompts on the unit are followed.

Battery subscription model

Purchasers own the scooter itself, but not the batteries that power it. Instead, owners must enroll in a monthly subscription. The basic plan costs Rs 2,000 + GST (about Rs 2,360) and allows up to 35 kW of swappable battery power per usage month, translating to roughly 40 km of daily travel. The premium option, priced at Rs 3,500 + GST, allows up to 87 kW of battery usage per month, or about 100 km per day. Exceeding these caps incurs additional charges, while unused allowance does not roll over.

This arrangement influences the scooter’s total cost of ownership. The base price of Rs 1.51 lakh (ex‑showroom) is already high for the Indian market, and the recurring subscription adds a variable expense that can make budgeting unpredictable.

Pricing and market positioning

Overall, the Honda Activa e delivers a respectable ride with a familiar design and a feature‑rich instrument panel. Yet limited under‑seat storage, a somewhat convoluted button layout and the ongoing battery subscription model may deter cost‑sensitive buyers. Potential owners should weigh the convenience of rapid battery swaps against the added monthly fees and ensure that swapping stations are accessible in their daily routes.
