Toyota’s GR86 has received subtle but technical upgrades in Japan, reflecting the automaker’s focus on driver engagement and motorsport-derived refinements. The changes target throttle response, steering precision, and gearshift ergonomics—all areas where enthusiasts and racers demand fine-tuned control.

The most visible shift comes in the manual transmission, where the gap between fourth and fifth gears has been widened by 0.5 millimeters. Toyota describes this as improving “enhanced operability when downshifting,” a detail that may sound trivial but aligns with the GR team’s approach to incremental yet meaningful adjustments. The tweak mirrors the kind of precision engineers apply in motorsport, where milliseconds matter.

Developers drew on feedback from Japan’s Super Taikyu race series, where the GR86 competes, ensuring the updates reflect real-world track conditions. Throttle response has also been refined for better linearity, particularly when exiting corners or in slippery conditions, though the automaker’s phrasing suggests the goal was to make oversteer slightly more predictable.

These mechanical changes sit alongside practical updates: the EyeSight safety system now uses three cameras instead of two, expanding blind-spot coverage at junctions. A new matt grey paint option, last seen in 2017 on the original GT86, returns, while interior switches have been repositioned for easier access.

The base price for the updated model in Japan starts at ÂĄ2.936 million, roughly ÂŁ13,800.

The GR86 Cup Car Basic is now offered with an automatic transmission in Japan.
