McLaren has unified its operations under McLaren Automotive and McLaren Racing, marking a new chapter for the Woking-based brand. The rebranding coincides with a £500 million investment to expand UK facilities and develop hybrid powertrains, including a performance SUV now officially confirmed. This move signals McLaren’s intent to build a complete portfolio around its supercar heritage, with plans to maximize brand value and client loyalty through carefully segmented models.

The long-rumoured McLaren SUV, referred to as a “performance SUV,” has been officially confirmed, though no launch timeline was provided. The visual redesign, teased on the McL 6GT, represents the first chapter of McLaren’s future direction. The company states this SUV could mark the beginning of an expanded product range, moving beyond years of incremental updates to existing models. McLaren Automotive emphasizes that the new branding reflects its broader strategy to diversify while maintaining its distinctive identity.

The £500 million investment will fund expansion of its Composites Technology Centre in Rotherham and fully utilize its recently opened Creation Centre in Bicester, which focuses on design, alongside a testing facility in the Midlands. These upgrades aim to support in-house development of next-generation powertrains, building on McLaren’s history with hybrid technology like the P1. The company and its original Forseven investors are shifting focus from a full electric push to hybrid engines and transmissions designed and engineered internally.

Investment and Expansion Plans

McLaren projects the investment will create 1,000 new jobs by 2032 and safeguard existing roles, with up to 3,000 additional positions potentially emerging in the wider supply chain. The funding comes from L’IMAD, a sovereign investment fund established by the government of Abu Dhabi, which McLaren describes as part of a wider commitment to its growth. CEO Nick Collins stated the investment provides a platform to build on what makes McLaren distinctive.

Hybrid Engine Development

Two new engines and transmissions will be developed in-house, supporting McLaren’s hybrid strategy. While the brand is not pursuing a full shift to electric vehicles, this focus on hybrid technology aligns with its existing expertise. The investment enables McLaren to develop its next generation of powertrains in-house, building on McLaren Automotive’s pioneering use of hybrid tech starting with the P1.
