
The first all-electric Volkswagen GTI has arrived, and it delivers less speed than the model it replaces.
Volkswagen revealed the ID.Polo GTI on May 15, applying the GTI nameplate to a fully electric vehicle for the first time. This change marks the most significant update to the Polo GTI since its introduction 28 years ago, moving from internal combustion to battery power.
Performance lags behind the outgoing model
The ID.Polo GTI’s electric motor generates 222 horsepower, 18 more than the previous 2.0-liter turbocharged version. Despite the higher output, acceleration from 0-62 mph has increased from 6.5 to 6.8 seconds. Top speed has also fallen from 150 mph to 109 mph.
Weight plays a key role in the reduced performance. The electric variant weighs 185 kg more than its predecessor. Volkswagen has introduced chassis improvements to address the gap. The new model includes a 35% stiffer spring rate, a 15 mm lower ride height, and a reinforced anti-roll bar. Adaptive suspension, quicker steering, and a mechanical limited-slip differential—features missing in competitors like the Alpine A290—aim to improve handling.

The standard ID.Polo is already 50% stiffer than a combustion Polo due to torsion rings at both ends. While the GTI version does not further increase rigidity, it refines the setup with unique wheel carriers that allow an additional degree of negative camber.
Battery efficiency exceeds competitors
A 52 kWh battery gives the ID.Polo GTI an estimated range of 262 miles, outperforming the Alpine A290’s 235 miles despite sharing the same capacity. Volkswagen credits this efficiency to its APP290 electric motor, which combines the inverter, gear system, and oil cooler into a single unit. The design improves cooling and reduces reliance on rare earth materials.
The motor also uses software to simulate the feel of a combustion engine, preventing sudden RPM spikes during wheelspin. Charging speeds reach 105 kW, enabling a 10-80% charge in 24 minutes.
PowerCo, Volkswagen’s battery division, developed the unit with a top cooling plate for better thermal management. The layout allows for future updates, including potential new battery chemistry during a mid-cycle refresh.
Styling maintains GTI heritage
The ID.Polo GTI retains classic GTI design elements, such as red accents on the front light bar and a honeycomb grille. It rides on 19-inch diamond-cut wheels unique to this model.
The transition to electric power redefines the GTI concept, but the new model’s slower acceleration and lower top speed place it behind its combustion predecessor in straight-line performance. The handling improvements may help justify the badge for some drivers.
Volkswagen has not yet detailed whether the ID.Polo GTI will replace the combustion version entirely or coexist as a separate offering.
